Fugitive Time

Janie Geiser / Automata

“Geiser shares with filmmakers such as Jan Svankmajer the rare ability to make children’s toys and seemingly innocent objects … resonate with the most unsettling, arcane, and adult fears. Better still, Geiser gives voice to the reaches of the unconscious, pointing to the abandoned splendor that exists prior to the rules of society and language.” – Holly Willis (Chair of Media Arts and Practice at USC)
Fugitive Time is a multidisciplinary performance that integrates performed objects and puppetry with live performance, and live-feed video manipulations of found, constructed, collaged, and human elements to form an integrated live “film-performance.” Using Bunraku–inspired puppets, cutouts, shadow puppets, and video, Fugitive Time explores the tension between the miniature and the magnified, the landscape and the body.

FUGITIVE TIME premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara in September 2014, followed by a full performance run in Los Angeles at Automata in October 2014.
