This month, LAPP founder Miranda Wright will spend some time with Artsadmin, an admirable 37-year-old organization in London, as part of a fellowship supported by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the British Council.
Founded by Judith Knight in 1978, Artsadmin has developed into one of the most vital resources for artists in contemporary performance and public practice in the UK. Their mission is simply stated: To make art happen. Judith and her team accomplish this through three primary programs: Producing work they love made by artists they have developed strong relationships with, operating Toynbee Studios (rehearsal and office spaces, plus an arts bar + cafe), and by offering a slew of impressive artists’ services.
The early days of Artsadmin are remarkably similar to the current state of affairs at Los Angeles Performance Practice. How did they sustain through growth? “We have quite simply chosen to work with artists whose work we love, and this has given us an artistic identity. What I feared might have been a bit idealistic in the early years has paid off in the longer term.” (Judith Knight, the producers)
We are shadowing this remarkable company, hoping to enhance our own offerings in artists’ services and producing support. Stay tuned, as we plan to announce a major new program this Fall!
